In this election year, hear Professor Luigi Zingales of the Chicago Booth School of Business explain why “the American Dream” is disappearing and what we must do to save the system that made the United States the envy of the world.  In his new book, A CAPITALISM FOR THE PEOPLE: Recapturingthe Lost Genius of American Prosperity, Zingales cuts through the liberal–conservative, Democrat–Republican rhetoric. “What is necessary is nothing less than a rethinking of traditional political categories,” according to Zingales.

In A CAPITALISM FOR THE PEOPLE, Professor Zingales examines the roots of the recent economic and political crises, from cronyism between big business and government, to the deleterious effects of lobbying and government subsidies, to the uneasy alliance between academic economists and the industries they analyze.

His elegant blueprint of solutions calls for lessening income disparities, reducing government subsidies and regulations, and creating greater transparency. Zingales maps out his plan in an engaging manner that suits his message of populism. His fundamental message: We need to get the system back in order before even more Americans lose faith. We need to take back the great system of equal-opportunity capitalism for the people.

Luigi Zingales is the Robert C. McCormack Professor of Entrepreneurship and Finance and the David G. Booth Faculty Fellow at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business. He is Vice President of the American Finance Association, a faculty research fellow for the National Bureau of Economic Research, and Lead Independent Director of Telecom Italia. He is the co-author of Saving Capitalism from the Capitalists
